Behavior, of some, at Pennsylvania State University last night portends a deep cleavage in values. Students were rioting about the firing of the football coach ! Now, I am assuming the rioting students read and understood the indictments, that provoked the firing.
The motivation for keeping the lid on these crimes of the football program will come out in time. But, we do know, notwithstanding these crimes, that college football has become “nuts”. Campus football has been corrupted by money, lowering of moral standards, media frenzy, and cultural overvaluing of the game itself. People, other than George Will are now questioning college football’s relationship to academics. As legend goes, some many years ago. and before football craziness just took over, there was a coach in Knoxville due to receive a raise in salary. The, then governor of the state noticed the coach would be making more money than himself. The governor stopped the raise and declared no football coach is going to make more money than the governor. The governor had it right.
